The Nigeria Hydrological Service Agency, NIHSA, weekend, released updates on rising water levels of River Benue, saying the water level is already getting to flood levels as of Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
Therefore, NIHSA warned that it is very imperative for states and local governments to activate preventive measures to mitigate the impact from the expected flood.
“The water levels showed danger signs and looming devastation of flood that would hit states along the River Benue.”
NIHSA also said it would continue to update Nigerians on the flood they would experience, and counselled that the needful should be done before the worst happens.
The statement read, “The water levels at our critical stations along Benue Basin as at Thursday 19th September 2024; the rise is steady and normal.
“The water levels is at the flood levels at our critical stations along River Benue Basin as at Friday 20th September.
“Let Nigerians clear their canals, drainages and gutters.
“Saturday 21st September 2024, the water levels at the nation’s critical stations along the River Benue showed a steady increase towards flood levels.
“The 12 flood-prone states are thereby warned to put measures in place to contain or allow conveyance.
“We appeal to Nigerians to clear their canals, drainages and gutters to mitigate floods.”
