The Kebbi State Police Command has apprehended 165 suspected illegal immigrants and handed them over to the Nigeria Immigration Service for further investigation and necessary legal action.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the command’s spokesperson, Chief Superintendent of Police Nafiu Abubakar, revealed that the arrests were made during an intelligence-led operation on January 31, 2025, around 5:00 PM. Security operatives had uncovered the presence of over 200 individuals living in a cramped three-bedroom flat in the Kuwait area of Birnin Kebbi. A team from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) raided the premises, successfully detaining 165 occupants.
Preliminary investigations indicated that all those arrested were from Francophone West African countries, including 110 from Ivory Coast, 35 from Burkina Faso, 11 from Benin Republic, five from Niger Republic, and four from Mali.
Further inquiries revealed that none of the individuals possessed valid travel documents, and they were allegedly involved in the Qnet Ponzi scheme, a suspected fraudulent investment platform known for defrauding unsuspecting victims.
Following the initial investigation, the police transferred the suspects to the Nigeria Immigration Service, Kebbi State Command, for further action.
Meanwhile, the police reassured the public of their commitment to maintaining security and enforcing immigration laws. They also urged residents to report any suspicious activities in their communities.
