A U.S. citizen, identified as Akinyela Sawa Taylor, was fatally shot after hijacking a small passenger aircraft in Belize, leaving two people injured in the process.
According to authorities, Taylor seized control of the plane at knifepoint while it was en route from Corozal to San Pedro, with 14 passengers on board. During the hijacking, he stabbed two passengers in the back while demanding the pilot fly him out of the country.
Belize Police Commissioner Chester Williams said the crisis came to a head when another passenger shot Taylor in the chest. The pilot managed to land the aircraft safely at Philip Goldson International Airport after the plane circled dangerously over the coast near Belize City due to dwindling fuel.
Taylor was later pronounced dead at a local hospital. One of the stabbed passengers is reportedly in critical condition.
Details remain limited, but Commissioner Williams told local media that the passengers narrowly escaped a potential tragedy. The U.S. Embassy has confirmed it is cooperating with Belizean authorities to investigate the incident.
