What’s “Happy” about the New Legal Year?
While the Federal Government is responsive to the plights of higher court judges, the State Governments are yet to do anything about the salaries and adequate infrastructure for the Magistrates and customary Court Judges.
Is it because there are no election petitions being handled by lower courts?
The State Governments continue to toy with justice for the common man, they don’t understand the repercussions of injustice at the most basic level of government.
Voters come from the local government and if they can’t get justice, it’s a matter of time before insecurity and rebellion sets in.
The lower court Judges are the ones working the most in our justice system and without them no government can guarantee peace within its polity.
What is the function of our State Chief Judges? Are they going to just sit there and watch as the 3rd arm of the government is ruined? Are they an extension of the Executive Arm of government which is filled with self serving politicians? Judges of the higher court are only as strong as their weakest link… Judges forget that their seniors, law school mates and juniors hold positions in the lower courts…they forget that they are all Lawyers.
What about the Legal Community? NBA, NLS, CLASFON, MULAN, CATHOLIC LAWYERS ASSOCIATION etc… of what value are these legal organizations to the development and sustainability of a free and fair social and economic space. They are all slowly becoming irrelevant in the eyes of the common man.
What are our lawyers who are legislators doing? Some of them forget their calling..politics has turned their wigs and gowns into agbadas and political rags.
It’s shameful that a magistrate who judges amongst men is paid less than 500k in this economy and we expect them to be above board? We ignorantly echo the sections on judicial ethics and morality in their ears and expect them to be incorruptible?
Give lower court Judges what they require and deserve and if they are corrupt we will fish them out and disgrace them BUT DONT TORTURE THEM AND EXPECT THEM NOT TO CRY OUT AND DO THE BIDDING OF EVIL MEN.
It’s time Lower Court Judges speak up…what are you afraid of? Are you not all Barristers and Solicitors of the Supreme Court of Nigeria?
It’s time citizens speak up…Justice is for you…it is your right as citizens of this great nation…DEMAND FOR IT!
