The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has arrested 1,088 suspects linked to various financial crimes in separate operations conducted in 2024. These operations also led to the recovery of $11.45 million and ₦142.26 billion, according to a statement issued on Tuesday by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi.
The crackdown is part of Nigeria’s broader efforts to address its placement on the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) grey list, which identifies the country as a high-risk jurisdiction for money laundering and terrorism financing.
Adejobi highlighted that in response to Nigeria’s grey list designation in February 2023, the police intensified financial crime investigations by establishing specialized units such as the Special Anti-Fraud Unit, the National Cybercrime Centre, and the newly launched Anti-Money Laundering Unit.
“These units have made significant progress in combating financial crimes, securing 152 convictions, and recovering $11,450,000 and ₦142,261,254,228.80,” he stated.
The National Cybercrime Centre (NCC) played a major role in these efforts, leading to the arrest of 751 cybercrime suspects and the recovery of ₦8.82 billion, $84,000, and 115,237.91 USDT.
One of the most notable operations was “Operation Butterfly Net,” which targeted a cyberattack on Flutterwave. This operation led to the arrest of 179 individuals involved in laundering over ₦11 billion.
In addition to arrests and recoveries, the police have enhanced their financial crime-fighting capacity through the Anti-Money Laundering and Countering the Financing of Terrorism Sections. Over 2,000 officers have been trained in money laundering and terrorism financing investigations, further strengthening Nigeria’s ability to combat financial crimes.
The NPF’s intensified efforts signal a firm commitment to improving Nigeria’s global financial integrity and restoring confidence in the country’s anti-corruption framework.
