Former President Goodluck Jonathan has distanced himself from a viral Instagram post suggesting he is preparing to run in the 2027 presidential election.
The post, shared from an account bearing Jonathan’s name, criticized Nigeria’s current leadership, stating that the country’s leaders are “pretending to sleep,” and urged Nigerians to make wise decisions at the polls.
“Since our current leaders are pretending to sleep, we pray that we will get our good leadership back in 2027. Your choice will determine the betterment of our future,” the post read.
Accompanying the message was a photo of Jonathan shaking hands with former U.S. President Donald Trump. The post has since attracted over 16,000 views, 1,247 comments, and 248 shares, fueling speculation that Jonathan may be considering a return to the presidency.
However, in a swift reaction, Jonathan’s spokesperson, Ikechukwu Eze, clarified on Friday that the former President does not own or operate any Instagram account.
“Former President Jonathan does not own an Instagram account,” Eze stated.
Since leaving office in 2015 after conceding defeat to former President Muhammadu Buhari, Jonathan has remained a prominent figure in African diplomacy. While rumors of a potential return to politics persist, he has consistently focused on promoting democracy, peace, and good governance across West Africa.
