Burkina Faso’s military government has announced that it has foiled an alleged plot to assassinate the country’s leader, Captain Ibrahim Traoré.
The claim was made by the Minister of Security, Mahamadou Sana, during a late night national broadcast. According to him, the plan was orchestrated by Lieutenant Colonel Paul Henri Damiba, the former junta leader who was removed from power in September 2022.
Sana said intelligence agencies uncovered the operation at the final stage, alleging that the plotters intended to kill Traoré and then launch coordinated attacks on key state institutions and prominent civilian figures.
The minister further claimed that the alleged coup plot received external backing, accusing neighbouring Ivory Coast of providing financial support. He stated that about 70 million CFA francs were delivered to finance the operation. Neither Ivory Coast nor Damiba has responded to the accusations.
Authorities said a leaked video was recovered showing the suspects discussing plans to assassinate the president, either through a close range attack or by planting explosives at his residence late on January 3. The plot allegedly included plans to disable Burkina Faso’s drone launch base to prevent foreign intervention.
Sana disclosed that several arrests had been made and investigations were ongoing, adding that those involved would soon face prosecution. He assured citizens that the situation was under control and urged the public not to be drawn into actions that could destabilise the country.
Captain Traoré, who seized power in 2022, has survived multiple coup attempts and continues to battle jihadist insurgency that has displaced millions across the country. Despite criticism from rights groups over alleged authoritarian practices and suppression of dissent, the 37-year-old leader maintains strong domestic support and has gained wider attention across Africa for his pan Africanist stance and rejection of Western influence.
Damiba, who led Burkina Faso briefly in 2022 after overthrowing an elected government, has been living in exile in Togo since his removal and previously wished Traoré success in a public message.
