The Abia State Government has announced that land documents—both for developed and undeveloped properties—will be revoked if owners fail to submit them for recertification.
Abia State Commissioner for Lands and Housing, Chaka Ikenna Chukwumerije, made this known on Thursday in Umuahia while declaring the commencement of enforcement for title recertification and ground rent demand notices.
He stated that despite multiple deadline extensions since May 2024, many landowners have yet to comply with the directive. The government had previously instructed property owners to provide proof of submission of their title documents for recertification, evidence of up-to-date ground rent payments, and other statutory fees. In addition, they were required to present fencing permits and approved building plans where applicable.
Chukwumerije emphasized that all housing estates, including IBB Phase 1, Agbama, Isieke, World Bank Umuahia, and Aba, are subject to the enforcement action.
“Non-compliance with this notice will be considered as proof of non-payment of ground rent or failure to fulfill the terms of land allocation, which could lead to the revocation of the Certificate of Occupancy (CofO) or withdrawal of land allocation, in accordance with existing laws,” he warned.
He urged affected landowners to submit the required documents to the Ministry of Lands and Housing at the Abia State Secretariat, Umuahia, or the Aba zonal office within 14 days to avoid legal action.
