Two members of the house of representatives from Bayelsa have resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party and joined the All Progressives Congress, marking another shift in the political balance at the national assembly.
The lawmakers, Rodney Ambaiowei who represents Southern Ijaw federal constituency, and Oboku Oforji who represents Yenagoa Kolokuma Opokuma federal constituency, formalised their defection through letters addressed to the speaker of the house, Tajudeen Abbas. The letters were read during plenary on Wednesday.
Ambaiowei explained that he was leaving the PDP because of what he described as a lingering leadership crisis that has affected the party across the country. According to him, the internal conflict has created uncertainty over which faction controls party activities, making it difficult for him to function effectively as a representative.
He stated, “This decision is born out of the division in the national leadership of the PDP, which has spread across the party structures and created confusion about who is responsible for the party affairs. With this lack of clarity, it has become difficult to perform my duties and properly represent my constituency.”
Their defection comes barely a day after Mansur Musa, a representative from Kebbi, also left the PDP for the APC.
The move follows a similar political shift last month when Douye Diri, governor of Bayelsa state, dumped the PDP and joined the APC.
These recent defections further reduce the number of PDP lawmakers in the national assembly, widening the gap between the opposition party and the ruling APC.
