Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress presidential aspirant, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has firmly declared that he will not withdraw from the 2027 presidential race.
Atiku made the declaration in a statement released on Tuesday and signed by his media aide, Paul Ibe, where he accused the Presidency and the ruling All Progressives Congress of interfering in the internal affairs of the ADC, particularly its choice of presidential candidate.
The statement, titled Nigeria’s Democracy Under Siege: Opposition Faces Existential Threat, alleged that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration is working towards imposing a one party system on the country by weakening opposition platforms.
Apart from Atiku, other prominent politicians including former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, have also indicated interest in contesting for the ADC presidential ticket.
Atiku claimed that individuals aligned with the Presidency are attempting to destabilise the ADC by making public statements aimed at influencing who emerges as the party’s presidential candidate. He described such actions as external meddling designed to sabotage the opposition.
He stated that all aspirants seeking the ADC ticket have agreed to subject themselves to a presidential convention, following assurances from the party’s national leadership that the selection process would be open, transparent, and competitive.
The former Vice President warned that any attempt to pressure him to step aside would undermine democracy and play into the hands of authoritarian interests.
According to him, Nigerians have endured years of economic hardship and shrinking democratic space under the Tinubu administration, which he accused of deliberately weakening opposition parties to remain in power by default rather than performance.
He said the ADC was formed as a national rescue platform by concerned leaders determined to offer Nigerians a credible alternative, stressing that no individual or group outside the party has the authority to dictate its internal decisions.
Atiku also noted that the ADC is currently focused on strengthening its structures at the ward, local government, and state levels, warning against infiltration and disruption.
Reacting to recent political developments, he said the public declaration of ADC membership by Peter Obi in Enugu had triggered visible panic within the ruling party, leading to alleged threats and plans to undermine the ADC.
He concluded by stating that no aspirant would be forced to step down, insisting that if anyone should consider stepping aside, it should be President Tinubu, whom he described as a national liability.
Atiku reaffirmed that the ADC remains committed to ending what he called the political and economic misfortune imposed on Nigerians and vowed that democracy would not be surrendered without resistance.
