A political leader in Zamfara State, Hon Muazu Zannan Gwashi, has been confirmed dead months after he was abducted by armed bandits who repeatedly altered their ransom demands even after receiving part of the payment.
The incident occurred on July twenty two twenty twenty five when gunmen ambushed the vehicle of the Peoples Democratic Party chairman for Bukkuyum Local Government Area, Hon Muhammad Sala Wuta, along the Manyaci to Bukkuyum road. The bandits opened fire on the convoy, injuring Wuta in the hand and leg before abducting three people, including Hon Gwashi.
The kidnappers initially demanded a ransom of thirty million naira and told the family that it might take months before he would be released. After negotiations, they agreed to accept fifteen million naira instead. However, after collecting the money, the abductors refused to free him and insisted on receiving the remaining fifteen million naira, returning the total demand to thirty million naira.
Security analyst Malam Bakatsine, who commented on the incident in a post on X, said the kidnappers kept shifting their demands for months until the community eventually received reports that Gwashi had died in captivity. He described the development as a tragic reminder of the endless cycle of extortion and loss faced by families in the region.
Residents of Zamfara expressed their grief on social media, with many praying for the repose of his soul. Local outlet Idon Mikiya also shared details of the ransom negotiations and confirmed the news of his death.
Zamfara State has continued to struggle with recurring attacks, kidnappings and widespread insecurity across several local government areas such as Bukkuyum, Gusau, Maradun and Shinkafi. Despite security operations by the police and the military, armed groups have maintained a strong presence along highways and rural routes, leaving both private citizens and public officials vulnerable to abductions.
