Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja has granted the Nigerian government’s request for its witnesses to testify behind a screen in the ongoing terrorism trial against Biafra separatist leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
The ruling came on Tuesday following an ex-parte application filed by Chief Adegboyega Solomon, SAN, counsel to the federal government. In his submission, Solomon argued that the witnesses’ identities must be protected for security reasons, given the sensitive nature of the charges.
He urged the court to allow the witnesses’ identities to remain undisclosed to the public to ensure their safety.
Kanu’s lead counsel, Chief Kanu Agabi, SAN, did not oppose the application. However, he appealed for similar cooperation from the prosecution when Kanu’s bail application is brought before the court.
Justice Omotosho subsequently approved the request for protected witness testimony.
As of the time of this report, the prosecution’s first witness, identified only by the pseudonym “PWAAA,” has begun giving testimony as the federal government officially opens its case against Kanu.
