The Economic Community of West African States has announced a state of emergency across the region in response to the growing wave of coups, attempted takeovers and military unrest affecting several member countries.
The President of the ECOWAS Commission, Omar Touray, made the declaration on Tuesday during the 55th session of the Mediation and Security Council at ministerial level held in Abuja.
He explained that the meeting was called to address rising instability in the region, noting that recent developments have placed serious pressure on democratic institutions and regional security structures.
Touray stated that the situation demands a deep reassessment of the region’s democratic future and an urgent commitment to strengthen security frameworks within the community.
According to him, the increasing number of coups and failed mutinies reflects a troubling trend that requires coordinated action and renewed political will among member states.
