The National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party has reacted to the defection of Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, describing his decision to join the ruling party as a self inflicted political setback.
In a statement issued by the National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong, the party said the governor’s exit mirrors the old legal expression Volenti non fit injuria, which translates to “no injury is done to one who consents to it.” The party noted that Governor Fubara willingly embraced the path that eventually led to his defection and therefore cannot accuse the PDP or any individual of neglect or abandonment.
The PDP added that while people facing intense political pressure may struggle with temporary disorientation, Governor Fubara has every reason to acknowledge the party, civil society groups and Nigerians who stood by him throughout the political conflict that engulfed Rivers State. The statement expressed concern that the governor might fall into what it described as the political equivalent of Stockholm Syndrome, where a victim begins to sympathize with those responsible for his ordeal.
Despite its disappointment, the party said it bears no ill will toward the governor and wishes him well in his new political journey.
The PDP also used the opportunity to highlight what it called the weakening of democratic institutions in Nigeria. According to the statement, the events in Rivers State have again exposed a system where powerful individuals override institutions and deploy the instruments of the Federal Government to intimidate opponents and dominate the political environment. The party warned that such tendencies amount to a grave threat to Nigeria’s democratic values.
The statement expressed deep concern over what it described as a continued effort by the ruling party to shrink the political space and push the country toward a one party state. It urged Nigerians and the international community to recognize the danger and unite against what it called a creeping form of electoral authoritarianism.
