President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday December 4, 2025 officially swore in retired General Christopher Musa, former Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), as Nigeria’s new Minister of Defence. The ceremony took place at the State House, according to Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.
Musa’s appointment follows the resignation of Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, who stepped down from the position due to health reasons. President Tinubu subsequently nominated Musa and transmitted his name to the Senate, where he was screened and approved as Abubakar’s replacement.
During his Senate screening on Wednesday, General Musa addressed pressing national security concerns, assuring Nigerians that the country possesses the capacity to overcome insurgency, banditry, and kidnapping, provided there is a comprehensive, coordinated effort across all levels of government.
“We can win this war, but we have to work together; if we collaborate with one another, it is very possible. Everyone, state governors, we have to be on it,” Musa emphasized.
He urged state governors and other senior political officeholders to actively collaborate with the Armed Forces, deploy modern technology, and ensure sufficient budgetary provisions for counter-terrorism operations.
Musa also pledged a thorough review of existing security strategies and a holistic investigation into recent operational lapses. He specifically referenced the abduction of 24 schoolgirls from Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State, two weeks ago, noting reports that troops had allegedly withdrawn from the area prior to the attack.
The new Defence Minister’s statements underscore a focus on both accountability and intergovernmental cooperation as central pillars of Nigeria’s renewed counter-terrorism strategy.
