Two police officers attached to the Force Intelligence Department are currently in detention in Abuja over allegations of armed robbery, extortion and abuse of power after they allegedly collected ten million naira from a businessman as ransom.
Findings show that the officers, identified as Adamu Sani and SP Austine, were part of a police team that invaded the Abuja residence of Lukman Abubakar on August 15, 2025, under the pretext of being officials of a power distribution company.
After forcing their way into the house, the officers allegedly took Abubakar to their office near the Inspector General of Police headquarters, where they demanded money in exchange for his freedom. He was reportedly threatened with being handed over to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission if he failed to comply.
According to Abubakar, the officers searched his home and carted away electronic devices including laptops, mobile phones and a MiFi router. He was later detained and interrogated over alleged involvement in illegal activities, including the use of cryptocurrency platforms.
The situation worsened when Abubakar was reportedly locked up overnight after negotiations for a smaller payment failed. The following day, the officers allegedly demanded ₦20million but later settled for ₦10million, which Abubakar raised through cash withdrawals.
After the payment was made, Abubakar was granted bail and released, with his seized items returned to him. However, he was instructed to continue reporting to the police office and submit his bank statements for review.
Following his release, Abubakar petitioned the Inspector General of Police. Investigations by the Police Complaints Response Unit later led to the return of four million naira, with a promise that the balance would be refunded. That balance was never paid.
Police authorities later confirmed that the officers were being detained and investigated for multiple allegations including extortion and abuse of office. Abubakar claimed the officers alleged that a senior police officer also benefitted from the ransom, complicating full recovery of the funds.
Efforts to obtain official comments from the Force Public Relations Office were ongoing at the time of reporting.
