Renowned human rights advocate and public affairs analyst, Prof. Chidi Odinkalu, has taken a swipe at the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) over what he described as the party’s hypocrisy in criticizing the opposition’s early mobilisation for the 2027 general elections.

This comes in response to a front-page report in The Nation Newspaper of Wednesday, July 9, 2025, where the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, was quoted as saying:
“Oppositions’ early 2027 moves won’t distract Tinubu.”
The report, which emphasized the President’s focus on delivering the “dividends of democracy,” featured the Minister asserting that:
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is not distracted by the antics of opposition parties who are already mobilising and setting up structures for the 2027 general elections…”
However, Prof. Odinkalu, a former Chairman of Nigeria’s National Human Rights Commission, fired back sharply via his verified X handle (formerly Twitter), where he posted:
“The party that called an extraordinary Summit before the 2nd year anniversary to declare #NoVacancy now complains that the opposition’s response is ‘early’?! Hypocrisy has no limits!”
This was in reference to a recent APC National Summit in Abuja, held just before President Tinubu’s second anniversary in office, where party loyalists declared emphatically that there was “no vacancy in Aso Rock” come 2027 — a slogan that has since trended as #NoVacancy across party-aligned platforms.
Observers say the ruling party’s internal posturing and early campaign signals have effectively kicked off the 2027 race, despite INEC’s timetable not being released. Critics like Odinkalu argue that it is disingenuous for the APC to now accuse the opposition of jumping the gun.
Political analysts believe this exchange underscores the already heating political atmosphere as Nigeria slowly begins the long road to another general election. While the APC insists the President remains focused, opposition forces continue to regroup and strategize.
The battle lines, it appears, are already being drawn — with words.
