The barrage of rejoinders churned out by Government House media handlers against the reflections of public-interest lawyer, Chinedu Agu, Esq., has now taken a dramatic turn.
Barely days after Agu published his widely-circulated article, “Tears from Enugu: A Lawyer’s Heartbreaking Diary from a State that Works to a State in Ruins,” the Honourable Commissioner for Information, Public Orientation & Strategy, Hon. Declan Emelumba, fired back with a rejoinder titled “Lawyer Agu’s ‘Satanic Verses’ Against Imo State Government.”
However, in his rejoinder, Emelumba made a damning allegation that has now landed him in legal hot water. The Commissioner claimed that “it is public knowledge that Agu and his associates wrote petitions against a previously nominated Chief Judge, seeking to remove him.”
Agu has now described that statement as a reckless lie and a descent into “the putrid gutter of defamation.” Through his solicitor, F.C. Obinna, Esq., the respected lawyer and past Secretary of the Nigerian Bar Association (Owerri Branch) has formally served Emelumba with a 72-hour ultimatum to retract the defamatory content and publish an unreserved apology or face legal action.
In the strongly-worded letter dated Monday, 1st September 2025 and already delivered to Emelumba, Agu’s lawyer warned:
“Your publication of this falsehood is not only reckless and malicious, but it also descends far beneath the standard expected of a person occupying the high office of the official spokesman of the Imo State Government.”
The letter further noted that if the Commissioner fails to comply, Agu will proceed to court to seek substantial general, aggravated, and exemplary damages, alongside injunctive reliefs and costs.
Agu, who has built a reputation as an outspoken advocate for good governance and the rule of law, insists that Emelumba’s false claim has injured his integrity as a lawyer and as a former NBA official who served “with remarkable distinction.”
Observers are now keenly watching if Emelumba will retract and apologise within the stipulated 72 hours, or if the matter will explode into a full-blown legal showdown in court.
