The Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) has called on President Bola Tinubu to mark the 2025 Democracy Day by championing human rights and facilitating the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
In a statement issued on Tuesday by its leader, Uchenna Madu, MASSOB emphasized that Kanu’s release would serve as a significant step toward national reconciliation and unity, while also improving relations between the federal government and various ethnic groups, especially in the Southeast.
Madu stated that the group’s appeal is rooted in democratic ideals and the principles of the rule of law.
“MASSOB believes that granting freedom to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu would pave the way for meaningful dialogue to address the longstanding grievances of the Southeast, particularly issues surrounding self-determination and demands for greater regional autonomy,” Madu said.
He noted that the appeal comes at a symbolic time in Nigeria’s democratic journey—June 12—a date that represents the spirit of democracy, justice, and equity.
“Our call for the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu resonates with the voices of many individuals and organizations across Igbo land, Nigeria, and the international community, who see his freedom as a crucial step in addressing deeper political and social issues,” the statement read.
MASSOB maintained that the appeal reflects a broader demand for justice and the acknowledgment of the rights of the Biafran people within the Nigerian state.
