Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has announced that the Federal Government is considering seizing and selling Dana Air’s remaining assets in order to refund passengers and travel agents whose money has been trapped since the airline’s operations were suspended.
The minister made the disclosure on Tuesday in Abuja during the Ministry’s fourth-quarter stakeholders’ forum themed “Leveraging Public Feedback to Drive Excellence in Aviation Services.”
Keyamo stated that he has directed the acting Director-General of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Capt. Chris Najomo, to thoroughly investigate why the trapped funds have not yet been refunded to affected passengers and agents.
He explained that the suspension of Dana Air was a deliberate choice between passenger safety and potential catastrophe, stressing that safety took absolute precedence over commercial considerations.
“We were faced with a clear choice: safety or disaster,” Keyamo said. “The NCAA suspended the airline after reviewing alarming safety reports and glaring lapses in standards that were putting Nigerian lives at serious risk. Had they continued flying, many of us might not be here today.”
To ensure restitution, the minister said the NCAA will be instructed to explore every avenue, including:
– Blocking the owners from returning to the aviation sector (whether through a new Air Operator’s Certificate or any related business) until all debts are cleared.
– Identifying and liquidating the airline’s remaining assets to generate funds for refunds.
“We will go after their assets,” Keyamo declared. “If necessary, we will cannibalize whatever is left and use the proceeds to pay Nigerians who are owed. They cannot be allowed to get away with it.”
The minister emphasized that passenger and agent refunds remain a priority and that the NCAA has been tasked with finding workable solutions without delay.
