Former Minister of Information Lai Mohammed says his loyalty to the All Progressives Congress and the administration of President Bola Tinubu remains unquestioned. He made the statement on Friday while delivering the 15th convocation lecture at Achievers University in Ondo State.
Mohammed explained that although he is no longer at the forefront of national political activity, his commitment has not changed. He revealed that he now prefers to contribute through discreet channels after spending eight years as minister, a tenure he described as the longest in the country’s history.
The former minister said he is currently focused on mentoring young people and sharing knowledge with students across tertiary institutions. Speaking on the lecture theme, “Do Not Just Graduate, Innovate,” he stressed that passing experience to the next generation is vital in preventing history from repeating itself.
He recalled recent engagements at Yaba College of Technology and Olabisi Onabanjo University, where he interacted with mass communication students, noting that knowledge transfer is his new priority.
Mohammed told the audience that no one truly retires from politics, insisting that once a person is involved, it becomes a lifelong journey.
He defended the federal government’s efforts in addressing insecurity and cautioned Nigerians against harsh criticism. According to him, those outside governance rarely understand the level of pressure and complexity involved. He maintained that national security requires community involvement and actionable intelligence from citizens.
He dismissed claims that Nigeria is drifting toward a one party system, arguing that political realignments are part of the nation’s democratic growth. Mohammed said history shows that mass movement between political parties is not new.
Turning to the graduating students, the former minister encouraged them to pursue innovation, resilience and bold thinking as they step into a rapidly evolving world shaped by artificial intelligence and new industries. He stressed that certificates alone will not guarantee success.
He shared parts of his own career path, describing how courage, reinvention and adaptability took him from studying French to becoming a public relations officer, lawyer, political strategist, spokesperson of the opposition and eventually a minister.
Mohammed urged the students not to fear change or failure, recalling moments he faced personal setbacks, including resigning from work with limited resources and experiencing electoral defeats. He said these challenges helped build the foundation for later accomplishments.
The former minister concluded by emphasising constant reinvention, reminding the graduands that the future belongs to those willing to challenge norms and rethink traditional routes to success.
