A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ebonyi State, Mazi Moses Idika, has urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to investigate and prosecute six Ebonyi State commissioners over alleged contract racketeering.
According to reports, the affected commissioners were suspended for allegedly breaching a contract for the construction of 140 housing units for the Izzo and Amaze communities. The officials under scrutiny include:
• Moses Ekuma – Commissioner for Health
• Professor Omari Omaka – Commissioner for Tertiary Education
• Hon. Victor Chukwu – Commissioner for Environment
• Engr. Ogbonnaya Igboke – Commissioner for Project Monitoring
• Mr. Ifeanyi Ogbuewu – Commissioner for Culture and Tourism
• Mr. Uchenna Igwe – Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs
Additionally, Mr. Timothy Nwachi, the Executive Chairman of Afikpo North Local Government Area, has also been indicted.
In a statement issued in Abuja on Friday, Idika described the revelations from Ebonyi’s Government House as alarming, claiming they expose why the state has experienced stagnation in the last two years.
“Recent developments in Ebonyi State have become worrisome to the point that all Ebonyians must now come together to save the state from ruin,” he stated.
Idika criticized the government’s response, noting that while the Commissioner for Border Peace and Internal Security, Mr. Donatus Ilang, has denied the arrests, the administration has not refuted allegations that state contracts were illegally awarded to public officials and their associates.
“This is a direct violation of the Ebonyi State Public Procurement and Related Matters Law No. 016 of 2020, which strictly prohibits public officials from participating in procurement processes due to conflicts of interest and the risk of corruption,” Idika added.
He called on anti-corruption agencies to take immediate action to ensure accountability and uphold the integrity of public office in the state.
