The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has declared that the Peoples Democratic Party would suffer a major collapse if he decides to leave the party for the All Progressives Congress.
Wike made this statement during his end of year media interaction held on Monday in Port Harcourt while addressing speculation about a possible defection to the ruling party.
Despite the recent movement of some of his political allies in Rivers State to the APC, including Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Wike insisted that he remains firmly rooted in the PDP and has no plans to exit the party.
According to him, his departure would trigger a wave of defections across several states, weakening the opposition party nationwide.
He explained that many party leaders in states such as Benue, Plateau, Abia and Edo would likely follow his lead if he were to make such a move.
Wike dismissed claims that the defection of some PDP members automatically puts pressure on him to leave, stressing that individual decisions should not be mistaken for collective direction.
Speaking on political leadership in Rivers State, Wike assured his supporters that his influence remains intact despite Fubara’s switch to the APC. He argued that becoming governor does not automatically translate into being the leader of a party structure in the state.
He clarified that party leadership begins at the ward level, not the state level, noting that there is no singular political figure known as number one in Rivers politics.
Wike further stated that leadership requires more than holding public office and must be earned through loyalty, capacity and acceptance by the people.
On the governor’s defection, Wike said it holds little political weight since Fubara moved alone without the backing of council chairmen, party leaders or members of the state assembly.
He added that joining the APC does not automatically secure a second term ticket for the governor, especially when the bulk of political structures had already aligned with the party before his defection.
