Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, has criticised former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, likening his political career to that of Premier League footballers who change clubs frequently.
Bwala made the remarks during an appearance on The Clarity Zone Podcast, where he described Obi as a political actor and opportunist rather than a consistent movement builder.
According to Bwala, Obi commands a strong online following whose supporters regularly attack politicians for defecting from one party to another, while allegedly ignoring Obi’s own history of party switches.
He argued that Obi’s political influence declined sharply after the 2023 general election, claiming that many of the lawmakers and candidates associated with him failed to secure or retain elective positions.
Bwala questioned Obi’s claim of building a political movement, stating that a true movement requires commitment, structure and loyalty over time. He suggested that many of Obi’s supporters eventually realised that the former governor lacked a clear intention or capacity to govern Nigeria.
Using a football analogy, Bwala said Obi’s frequent movement across political parties mirrors Premier League players who change clubs every season. He noted that Obi has previously been associated with APGA, PDP and the Labour Party, and claimed that he is now linked with the African Democratic Congress.
The comments have added to the ongoing political debate surrounding Obi’s role and relevance in Nigeria’s opposition politics.
