The anticipated defection of Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang appears settled, as a top member of the All Progressives Congress National Working Committee confirmed that the governor has already met with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of his formal reception into the ruling party.
With Governor Agbu Kefas of Taraba State now regarded as part of the ruling party and Mutfwang’s switch almost concluded, the All Progressives Congress has effectively expanded its control to twenty six states.
Governor Mutfwang, who was elected under the platform of the internally divided Peoples Democratic Party, is expected to make his defection public in the coming days. His move will finally put an end to months of speculation about his political alignment ahead of the 2027 general election.
There had been claims that his planned defection was being resisted by the national chairman of the party, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda. However, a senior party official dismissed such reports, insisting that the chairman had no objection to receiving the Plateau governor.
According to the source, Governor Mutfwang spoke with the chairman last week and communicated his decision to leave the opposition for the All Progressives Congress. Following the discussion, the chairman, who was Mutfwang’s opponent in the last governorship election, reportedly accompanied him to Aso Villa for a private meeting with the president.
The source said, “Governor Mutfwang has already met the president after informing the chairman that he is ready to join our party. He explained his position to the chairman on Tuesday, and by Sunday both of them visited the president.”
He further added that the governor will be formally welcomed into the All Progressives Congress very soon.
The party official also revealed that Governor Agbu Kefas of Taraba State is now being treated as an All Progressives Congress governor, even though his official reception was postponed out of respect for the national mood at the time.
“With Kefas already on board, we now have twenty six governors,” the source said.
