The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has rescued a two-day-old baby from an alleged trafficking syndicate and arrested several suspects who attempted to sell the infant for N800,000.
This was disclosed in a statement issued on Monday in Uyo by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Timfon John.
According to the statement, police operatives intercepted a Mazda vehicle with registration number YAB 454 AA during a patrol along the Nsit Atai-Oron Road. The vehicle, driven by a man and carrying two women, was found with the newborn baby.
The suspects — Bethel Anyanwu (male), Nasikpo Sonia Labere (female), and Inemesit Okin Akpan (female) — were unable to provide a credible explanation regarding the baby’s identity or origin.
Upon further interrogation, the two women confessed they had been sent from Port Harcourt, Rivers State, by two other women identified as Waazor Godwin and Lilian Duru, to collect the baby from one Miss Grace Inyang in Oron.
Further investigations revealed that one Alison Eduno facilitated the transaction between the baby’s buyer and seller.
The police also arrested the baby’s mother and grandmother — Blessing Walter, 20, and Grace Walter, 55 — both residents of Oti Oron. They confessed to selling the infant for N800,000.
The rescued baby has been handed over to the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare in Uyo for care, pending the conclusion of the investigation.
All suspects are currently in police custody and will be charged to court upon completion of investigations.
