Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Lateef Fagbemi, has stated that the declaration of emergency rule in Rivers State prevented the impeachment of suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara by the Martins Amaewhule-led House of Assembly.
Speaking on Wednesday at the State House in Abuja, Fagbemi defended President Bola Tinubu’s decision to impose emergency rule, emphasizing that it served as a strategic move to halt the impeachment process against Fubara.
Recall that on Tuesday night, President Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, suspending Governor Fubara, his deputy, and members of the State House of Assembly for six months. In their place, Vice Admiral Ibokete Ibas (retd.) was appointed to oversee the state’s administration.
Addressing the situation, Fagbemi noted that the emergency rule effectively interrupted the impeachment proceedings initiated by the House of Assembly, thereby preventing Fubara from being permanently removed from office.
“If that impeachment had been allowed to run its full course, the governor would have been completely removed from office,” Fagbemi said. “So, in a way, you could see this as a compromise—rather than allowing the impeachment process to go forward, which would have resulted in both the governor and deputy governor being ousted for the remainder of the four-year term.”
