Below The main suspect in the killing of a retired Chief Judge of Delta State, Justice Ifeoma Okogwu, has admitted that the crime was carried out in order to steal her mobile phones and personal valuables.
The suspect, Godwin Mngumi, made the confession after he was presented to the public by the Delta State Police Command on Tuesday. He revealed that he recruited two other young men to help him take items belonging to the retired judge, including phones, jewellery, a wristwatch and a power bank.
During questioning by the police spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, the 25 year old disclosed that he had recently been hired as a security guard at the victim’s residence. According to him, he had worked there for just over one week before the incident occurred.
Mngumi told police that the original plan was not to kill the retired judge but to steal her phone. He said they restrained her by tying her hands and legs before taking away her belongings.
He further explained that Justice Okogwu owned two mobile phones. He said his accomplice, identified as Nnaji Obalum, took possession of the larger Samsung phone, while the smaller phone was sold, although he did not disclose how much it was sold for.
Obalum, who is 21 years old, was also paraded by the police and admitted that the Samsung phone was recovered from him. He said he had inserted his own SIM card into the device before his arrest.
Both suspects expressed remorse over the crime and pleaded for forgiveness.
SP Bright Edafe, who shared a video of the suspects’ confessions on his social media page, disclosed that one other suspect connected to the crime is still on the run.
He also advised residents of Delta State to be cautious and thorough when employing domestic workers or security personnel, stressing the importance of proper background checks before granting access to private homes.
