Authorities in Sabon Birni Local Government Area of Sokoto State have dismissed widespread social media claims that armed men stormed a mosque in the community and killed an Imam along with several worshippers.
The chairman of the council, Ayuba Hashimu, said there was no such attack and described the circulating reports as entirely fabricated.
“I am not aware of any mosque that was attacked here. There was no killing of any Imam or worshipper. The story is simply untrue,” he told our correspondent in a telephone conversation.
A member of the Sokoto State House of Assembly representing the area, Aminu Boza, also debunked the reports, saying he had verified the situation and found no evidence of an assault.
“No mosque was attacked on Saturday. I do not know where the story originated, but it is not correct,” he said.
While authorities denied the alleged mosque attack, another troubling development has emerged.
The Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria has raised alarm over the reported kidnapping of six directors of the Ministry of Defence. According to the union, the victims were abducted while traveling from Lagos to Abuja for a promotion examination at the directorate level.
In a separate incident within the state, suspected bandits were reported to have attacked Alkalije village in Yabo Local Government Area, leaving five people dead, including a pregnant woman. Alkalije is a border settlement under Kilgori District and lies close to Silame Local Government Area. It shares boundaries with parts of Kebbi State, a region known for repeated incursions by the Lakurawa bandit groups.
Meanwhile, tension continues to rise in Kwara State as residents of Bayagan Ile in Ifelodun Local Government Area plead for government intervention in the abduction of their traditional ruler, Alhaji Kamilu Salami, the Ojibara of Bayagan Ile. The monarch was kidnapped ten days ago while working on his farm and is said to still be held in a forest.
The spokesperson for the community, Alhaji Rafiu Ayinla Lawal, issued a statement on Sunday urging security agencies and the state government to take urgent action.
He said the entire community has been living in fear and emotional distress since the abduction on 29 November 2025.
Lawal expressed concern that the police have not visited the community or issued any public update.
“Despite numerous efforts by the Royal Family and the Bayagan Ile community to support investigations, the Nigeria Police Force has not made any official statement or provided any update. This silence has deepened our anxiety and concern for the safety of our monarch,” he said.
He added that the Royal Family and the community have been shouldering the burden alone and cannot continue without government support.
“We appeal to the Kwara State Government to urgently come to our aid. We need coordinated assistance to secure the release of our monarch.”
The statement concluded with a plea for swift action, noting that the community remains hopeful that with decisive intervention, the monarch will be safely rescued.
