Owerri – In a significant boost to rural infrastructure and civil-military relations, the Nigerian Navy has inaugurated a 5,000 KVA transformer and a new town hall in Umuokoro Lowa Uboma, Ihitte-Uboma Local Government Area of Imo State.
The projects, executed under the Navy’s Special Quick Impact Project, were formally commissioned by the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, who was represented by Rear Admiral Chijioke Onyemaobi, Chief of Naval Transformation and Innovation. The initiative was attracted to the community by Rear Admiral Michael Igwe, Director of Weapon Electrical Engineering at Naval Headquarters and an indigene of the area.
Speaking at the event, Vice Admiral Abbas described the intervention as a key component of the Navy’s military-civil cooperation strategy aimed at achieving broader strategic objectives while improving the quality of life in host communities. He noted that the projects align with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda and urged residents to maintain the facilities and sustain collaboration with security agencies.
The 5,000 KVA transformer, which was activated two months ago, has restored electricity to Umuokoro and surrounding areas after three and a half years of total blackout caused by a faulty unit that could not be repaired. Additionally, the community received a fully furnished 80-seater town hall with modern restroom facilities, replacing a dilapidated structure built in the 1970s.
Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, represented by Deputy Governor Mrs. Chinyere Ekomaru, commended President Bola Tinubu’s support for the Armed Forces and lauded the Nigerian Navy for the timely intervention. The governor described the projects as a demonstration of commitment to community development, national unity, and improved living standards.
Rear Admiral Michael Igwe expressed gratitude to the Chief of Naval Staff for the swift execution of the projects and highlighted their direct impact on long-standing challenges faced by the communities.
Community leader Chief Collins Nwachukwu welcomed the development but appealed to the state and federal governments, as well as public-spirited individuals, to address pressing issues of erosion and poor road networks in the area.
The event was attended by prominent figures including the Speaker of the Imo State House of Assembly, Hon. Chike Olemgbe, and the Imo State Commissioner of Police, CP Audu Garba Bosso.
