Chris Kwaja international relations scholar Blames Xenophobic Attacks in South Africa on Economic Hardship and Historical Ignorance
A Professor of International Relations and Strategic Studies at Modibbo Adama University, Yola, Chris Kwaja international relations scholar, has attributed the persistent xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa to a combination of economic challenges and a lack of historical awareness among many young South Africans.
According to him, a significant number of youths in South Africa today have little or no knowledge of the critical role Nigeria played during the anti-apartheid struggle, which has contributed to negative perceptions and hostility toward Nigerians and other Africans.
Kwaja explained that Nigeria provided substantial support to South African freedom fighters during the apartheid era, including hosting key figures like Thabo Mbeki and contributing to the eventual release of Nelson Mandela. He stressed that this history has not been adequately taught or communicated, leading to a disconnect between past solidarity and present attitudes.
He also criticized successive Nigerian governments, from the era of Olusegun Obasanjo to the present, for failing to take decisive action against repeated attacks on Nigerians abroad. He argued that beyond issuing condemnations, the government has not fulfilled its fundamental responsibility of protecting its citizens globally.
Kwaja called for stronger diplomatic engagement with South Africa, including demanding compensation for Nigerians affected by xenophobic violence since 2000. He also emphasized the need for a comprehensive audit of Nigerians living in South Africa to document casualties, missing persons, and damages.
While acknowledging calls for retaliation, he firmly rejected such approaches, advocating instead for lawful and strategic responses. On the issue of evacuation, he noted that it would be costly and should be based on a proper assessment of citizens’ financial capacity, ensuring that only those in genuine need receive government support.
