Abuja – The Association of Meter Manufacturers of Nigeria (AMMON) has withdrawn its lawsuit against the federal government, removing a major legal obstacle to the deployment of 1.55 million smart meters across key government intervention programmes.
The withdrawal, formalised through a Notice of Discontinuance at the Federal High Court in Kano, follows intensive mediation led by the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe. The minister convened a high-level meeting with AMMON and relevant government agencies to resolve the dispute, according to a statement from the Ministry of Power.
AMMON’s earlier legal action had secured an injunction in April 2026, stalling bidding processes for major metering initiatives, including the Distribution Sector Recovery Programme (DISREP), Meter Acquisition Fund Phase 3 (MAF 3), and the Presidential Metering Initiative (PMI). The resolution is expected to accelerate procurement and fast-track efforts to close Nigeria’s persistent electricity metering gap.
The Ministry of Power described the outcome as a mutually acceptable solution that addresses the concerns of local manufacturers while fully complying with local and international competitive procurement standards.
“This agreement reflects the government’s commitment to promoting indigenous industrial participation without compromising the financing arrangements necessary for these critical metering programmes,” the ministry stated.
The development aligns with the federal government’s ‘Nigeria First’ policy on local content development and President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which emphasises deepening local manufacturing capacity alongside power sector reforms.
Officials noted that wider access to prepaid meters will enhance revenue collection for electricity distribution companies, reduce commercial losses, and phase out the contentious practice of estimated billing that has long frustrated consumers.
In a related development, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) announced on Tuesday that issues surrounding the invasion and encroachment on the C2 Maitama Substation have been resolved.
Following interventions by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe, repair and restoration works have commenced at the facility. Technical teams have been deployed to reinstate damaged infrastructure and restore electricity supply to customers in Maitama and surrounding areas as quickly and safely as possible.
AEDC commended the ministers for their leadership and thanked residents for their patience, reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding critical power infrastructure.
