Prince Stanley Ugochukwu, the newly inaugurated Chairman of the Nigerian Youth Congress in Imo State, has called on youth groups across the state to join forces with the organisation in pushing for stronger representation and practical empowerment programmes.
Speaking at his first press briefing after taking office in Owerri, Ugochukwu said the NYC under his leadership would work inclusively with other youth bodies to drive development in the oil- and gas-producing state.
He urged Governor Hope Uzodimma and his cabinet to deepen democratic governance so that residents can enjoy improved living standards. He specifically asked the Ministry of Youth and Talent Hunt to speed up measures that place young people in government jobs, public and civil service roles, skills training, trades and formal education, arguing that these steps would ease poverty, hardship and vulnerability.
“I am calling on every youth leader in Imo State to cue in with the NYC leadership to strengthen youth welfare and empowerment. We are willing to work cordially and effectively with all the youths of Imo in order to improve good governance,” he said.
Ugochukwu added that the leadership was concerned about the level of youth impoverishment and would collaborate closely with the Commissioner for Youth and Talent Hunt, Dr. Emeka Mandela Ukaegbu. Priority areas, he said, include digital and ICT training, trades, and access to political positions through election or appointment. Empowered young people, he argued, would contribute more effectively to state development, strengthen peace and security, and reduce crime.
He praised the Uzodimma-led administration for gains in productivity, commerce, peace, security, social development and economic activity. Among the projects he highlighted were road infrastructure, the Orashi Electricity Project and the attraction of the Robotic and Ontology Surgery Centre.
Ugochukwu also thanked the NYC National President, Engr. Jethro Annum, for appointing him and pledged to serve Imo State’s young people without disappointing them.
The Nigerian Youth Congress operates as a platform for youth advocacy and engagement with government. Imo State, an oil- and gas-producing area in the South-East, has seen continued focus on infrastructure and youth programmes under the current administration. Ugochukwu’s remarks mark his formal start as state chairman and signal an intention to coordinate more tightly with both official youth institutions and independent youth associations.
