Maiduguri — The Boko Haram terrorist group has released a video obituary mourning one of its media operatives, Abu Salim al-Barnawi, who was killed in a clash with Nigerian troops during a foiled attack on a military base in Borno State.
The three-minute, three-second video, which features al-Barnawi displaying his communication equipment at various locations, was shared on Wednesday by Captain Mohammed Goni, Acting Media Information Officer of the Headquarters Joint Task Force North East Operation HADIN KAI.
According to military sources, al-Barnawi was among scores of terrorists neutralized by troops in an intense firefight in the Lake Chad Basin area last week. The insurgent group had launched an assault on a Nigerian military camp when the videographer was killed.
Captain Goni confirmed that al-Barnawi served as a cameraman for the group and had previously led raids into Cameroon before transitioning to its media wing.
The development comes as Nigerian forces continue sustained operations against Boko Haram remnants in the North East, with the military reporting significant successes in disrupting the group’s activities.
This latest propaganda release by the insurgents highlights their attempt to commemorate a fallen member while underscoring the ongoing security challenges in the region.
