Owerri — The five governors of Nigeria’s South East zone have unanimously resolved to work for President Bola Tinubu’s victory in the 2027 presidential election, citing substantial infrastructure gains delivered to the region by his administration.
Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State, who doubles as Chairman of the South East Governors’ Forum, made the disclosure on Wednesday during a crucial meeting with the Imo State Elders Council and the Council of Traditional Rulers at the Government House, Owerri.
According to Uzodimma, the decision is anchored on “verifiable facts” of what the Tinubu administration has done for the South East, as opposed to what he described as mere propaganda and anti-government rhetoric by some politicians.
“For the first time in Nigeria’s history, the South East has a Development Commission,” Uzodimma said. He highlighted the signing of the South East Development Commission (SEDC) Act into law on July 24, 2024, the inauguration of its board in February 2025, and the commencement of operations as landmark achievements.
On transportation infrastructure, the governor noted the inauguration of the Port Harcourt–Aba rail line in May 2024, now operating commercially, and the allocation of $3 billion for the reconstruction of the entire Eastern Rail Corridor stretching from Port Harcourt through the South East to Maiduguri.
On roads, he pointed to ongoing work on Phases 2A and 2B of the access roads to the Second Niger Bridge, including a dual carriageway with seven bridges, and two newly approved major projects welcomed by Anambra Governor Charles Soludo: the 108-kilometre Otuocha-Anam-Abaji Road and the 150-kilometre Oba-Nnewi-Uga-Ihube/Okigwe Junction Road.
Uzodimma argued that these tangible projects, alongside national benefits such as student loans, increased federal allocations to states, and reduced vehicle import duties, demonstrate the administration’s commitment to the zone.
“The Igbo are not confused. They do not trade on sentiment. They look at what has been done, and they judge on that,” he said, urging residents to focus on evidence rather than political speeches.
The governor also used the occasion to seek the endorsement of the elders and traditional rulers for the full implementation of the Imo Charter of Equity, which aims to ensure power rotation among the state’s three senatorial zones. He appealed for their support in determining his successor in line with the charter’s principles.
Traditional rulers and elders at the meeting largely endorsed Uzodimma’s leadership and expressed support for equity, fairness, and continued alignment with the federal government for the overall development of Imo State and the South East.
