The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation has acknowledged in a court declaration that it investigated Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as part of a drug-trafficking inquiry in the early 1990s.
The confirmation appears in a sworn FBI statement filed on August 28, 2026, in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. The document was submitted in a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit seeking FBI records related to Tinubu.
In the declaration, the bureau said “the responsive records herein were compiled in furtherance of the FBI’s investigation of multiple individuals for drug trafficking crimes.” It added that “the court has already determined that an official acknowledgement had been made of an investigation of Bola Tinubu.”
The latest filing follows an April 2025 ruling by U.S. District Judge Beryl Howell. She held that the FBI and the Drug Enforcement Administration could no longer issue “Glomar” responses that neither confirmed nor denied the existence of records on Tinubu. Howell found the agencies had not shown sufficient privacy grounds to conceal that an investigation had occurred and ordered them to process the FOIA request, withholding only material covered by legal exemptions.
The ruling did not determine that Tinubu committed a drug-trafficking offense or that he was convicted of any crime.
American transparency activist Aaron Greenspan filed the underlying requests. He sought the “entire FBI file for Bola Ahmed Tinubu” and FBI 302 interview records involving Tinubu in Case No. 245-IP-71386-UUUUUU from 1992 and 1993. The requests form part of a broader effort to obtain documents on a Chicago heroin-trafficking investigation from that period.
The FBI continues to withhold portions of the records. It cites exemptions covering personal privacy, confidential sources, law-enforcement methods, and information that could endanger individuals. The agency said it could not publicly spell out the full rationale for every exemption.
