The President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, SAN, on Wednesday commended the Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ola Olukoyede, for strengthening the fight against economic and financial crimes and for the agency’s role in Nigeria’s removal from the Financial Action Task Force grey list.
Badejo-Okusanya led an NBA delegation on a courtesy visit to the EFCC corporate headquarters in Abuja. She said the association had followed the commission’s work closely, particularly its statistics on recoveries and convictions, and could “see, feel, and hear the impact.”
She specifically welcomed Nigeria’s exit from the FATF grey list, describing it as a development that has improved the country’s business environment. “For us as lawyers, we are grateful for the removal of the country from the FATF grey list. This brings out increased inflows. Our clients are able to do business. Cross-border transactions are now seamless and less expensive,” she said. She expressed hope that the gains would not reverse.
The NBA president stressed that a strong legal system underpins economic progress and said the association remains committed to deeper partnership with the EFCC. She offered the NBA’s professional expertise for knowledge sharing and called for closer collaboration to promote a lawful society and combat economic crimes.
Responding, Olukoyede attributed Nigeria’s removal from the grey list to the work of the EFCC in collaboration with other agencies. He thanked the NBA for its support, saying the achievement would have been difficult without it. Nigeria, he added, is now on a stronger footing in the global financial system.
The EFCC chairman restated his pledge to operate strictly within the law and remain accountable to the public. He said the commission is shifting toward prevention rather than waiting until funds are stolen, noting that a Fraud Risk Assessment and Control department has been established for this purpose.
Olukoyede also expressed readiness to work with the NBA to sanitise the legal profession and strengthen institutional cooperation against economic and financial crimes.
