Sokoto catholic bishop Matthew Kukah has called on Nigerians to thoroughly research candidates and accept responsibility for their choices in the 2027 general elections, warning that the ballot will shape the country’s future.
Speaking on Friday at the 70th anniversary celebration of Saint Finbarr’s College, Kukah said voters often blame the Independent National Electoral Commission, the government and security agencies for election problems. He insisted they must also own the decisions they make at the polls.
“We can blame INEC, we can blame government. But in the final analysis, nobody is holding a gun to your head and asking you to vote for anyone,” he said. “Vote to stay alive. We are all largely responsible for the choices we make.”
Kukah urged citizens not to decide solely on political promises or party affiliation. He encouraged them to use online platforms to examine candidates’ records before casting their ballots.
His remarks come as political activity intensifies ahead of the 2027 elections. The All Progressives Congress has inaugurated a campaign council in Ogun State, while former presidential candidate Peter Obi visited Kaduna and cautioned politicians against making unrealistic promises.
