The Northern Women Lawyers Congress (NWLC) has issued a stern warning to Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II, urging him to comply with police directives and submit his statement regarding the violence that erupted during the banned Sallah Durbar celebration in Kano.
In a statement released on Sunday, Chairperson of the Congress, Barrister Nafisa Abba, stressed that the Emir must respect the rule of law and heed the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun’s instruction to cooperate with the ongoing investigation.
“We are calling on the Emir to respect the law and the police institution by tendering his statement, as directed by the IGP,” Abba said.
Despite a police ban on the Durbar due to security concerns, the event went ahead, sparking violent clashes and resulting in fatalities. The Congress emphasized that accountability must apply to all citizens, regardless of their social standing.
“Being an Emir does not place you above the law. You are neither a governor nor a president, so the issue of immunity does not arise,” Abba asserted.
She warned that failure to comply would lead to mass protests by the Congress.
“If the Emir refuses to submit his statement, we will mobilize our members to protest on the streets of Kano,” she declared.
The NWLC, known for its legal advocacy and human rights work, clarified that its position is not politically driven but grounded in the pursuit of justice.
“As women lawyers, we have consistently supported justice and handled several pro bono cases, including for victims of rape and the Uromo killings in Edo State,” Abba added.
Responding to critics, she dismissed suggestions that the group is acting anonymously.
“We are not faceless. The NWLC is a legally recognized body. I, as Chairperson, am a registered member of the Kano Bar. Anyone can verify that,” she said.
