President Bola Tinubu has approved the expansion of 12 river basin projects across Nigeria, allocating hundreds of billions of naira to enhance food security and combat hunger.
The Director of Finance at Hadejia Jama’are River Basin, Musa Illiyasu Kwankwaso, confirmed the development in a statement issued on Saturday in Kano. He emphasized that President Tinubu’s commitment to agricultural development, particularly in northern Nigeria, is evident in this decision.
According to Kwankwaso, the expansion of these river basins will significantly boost food production and reduce hunger nationwide. He praised the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Appropriation, Alhaji Abubakar Kabir Abubakar Bichi, for his role in securing the budget for the revitalization of the river basins.
He also highlighted that the approval aligns with Tinubu’s broader vision for infrastructure and economic development, including an allocation of 150 billion naira in the 2025 Appropriation Bill for the construction of a railway line in Kano City.
“This project will revolutionize transportation, enhance connectivity, facilitate trade, and boost economic growth in Kano,” he said.
Kwankwaso noted that the revitalization of the river basins would enhance irrigation farming, making Nigeria more self-sufficient in food production. He added that the 2025 budget also includes billions of naira for the revitalization of over 12 dams to support irrigation farming.
Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Terlumun Utsev, reaffirmed the administration’s dedication to agricultural expansion, stating:
“President Tinubu is committed to ensuring Nigeria produces enough food to feed its growing population. Expanding these river basin projects will provide essential water resources for large-scale farming and irrigation”.
The 12 river basins earmarked for expansion include:
Sokoto-Rima River Basin
Chad Basin
Hadejia-Jama’are River Basin
Lower Benue River Basin
And others covering key agricultural regions.
These projects will provide farmers with stable water supplies for year-round cultivation, increasing crop yields and ensuring food availability.
The decision has been welcomed by farmers and agricultural stakeholders. The President of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Kabir Ibrahim, described it as a “step in the right direction” in achieving food security.
Many believe that improved irrigation infrastructure will help mitigate losses caused by erratic rainfall patterns and contribute to Nigeria’s long-term agricultural sustainability.
With the expansion of these river basins, the Tinubu administration aims to strengthen food production, improve infrastructure, and drive economic growth in the agricultural sector.
