At least 10 people lost their lives in a violent attack on Amagu village in Ishielu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State. The assailants, suspected to be herders, also set houses ablaze and destroyed properties worth millions of naira.
The attack occurred in the early hours of Sunday.
Spokesperson for the Ebonyi State Police Command, Joshua Ukandu, confirmed that security operatives recovered 10 bodies from the scene. He added that an investigation is underway, and security personnel have been deployed to restore calm.
“Several houses were selectively burnt, and other properties were destroyed. Upon receiving the report, we immediately deployed officers to the area,” Ukandu said. “We are actively investigating the incident while ensuring normalcy is maintained.”
Eyewitnesses recounted that the attackers, armed with guns and cutlasses, struck suddenly, leaving the community in devastation. Chairperson of Ishielu LGA, Mrs. Ifeoma Agwu, confirmed that authorities are still evacuating bodies and assessing the full extent of the casualties.
Prof. Ndubuisi Idenyi, a former Chairman of the Ebonyi State University Academic Staff Union of Universities (EBSU-ASUU) and a resident of the community, described the attack as heartbreaking.
“My village, Amegu Nkalaha, was attacked today by herdsmen. Many have been killed, and houses razed. What a black Sunday!” he lamented. He also warned that the casualty count could rise as security agencies continue their recovery efforts, particularly in farmlands.
The attack has sent shockwaves through the community, with authorities working to restore peace and provide support to affected residents.
