The Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has refuted claims that he opposes forming a coalition ahead of the 2027 elections, emphasizing that any alliance must prioritize the welfare of Nigerians rather than a mere struggle for power.
Obi made this clarification on Tuesday via his official X account after reports suggested he had rejected coalition efforts led by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and other opposition figures.
Speaking at a two-day national conference in Abuja on Monday, themed “Strengthening Nigeria’s Democracy: Pathway to Good Governance and Political Integrity,” Obi expressed skepticism about alliances formed solely for political advantage. However, he later clarified that his words had been misinterpreted.
“I have observed that my honest interview yesterday was misquoted by many media outlets, creating a false narrative that misrepresents my position,” Obi stated. “Let me set the record straight: I am not against coalition. In truth, I support it—not for a power grab but to position Nigeria for greatness.”
He stressed that governance discussions should focus on how they benefit everyday Nigerians by addressing critical issues such as healthcare, education, and poverty alleviation
Obi criticized past political alliances that, according to him, were formed solely to seize power without a clear vision for national development.
“Too often in our nation’s history, individuals and groups have come together solely for the purpose of taking power for power’s sake. Such endeavours, devoid of genuine purpose and vision, have only deepened our challenges, leaving ordinary Nigerians to suffer from bad governance,” he said.
Reaffirming his commitment to a “New Nigeria,” Obi insisted that political power should be used responsibly to improve lives, not as a tool for self-interest.
“Leadership must be about service, not self-interest. The New Nigeria is possible, but it requires us to change the way we think about power. It is not about grabbing it; it is about using it responsibly to transform lives and secure a brighter future for generations to come,” he concluded.
Obi’s clarification signals his openness to collaboration, but only if the coalition is built on genuine reform and a shared vision for national progress.
