The President of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, has reaffirmed the company’s commitment to ending Nigeria’s dependence on imported raw sugar through its Sugar Backward Integration initiative.
Speaking at the 14th Gateway International Trade Fair in Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Wednesday, Dangote, represented by Tunde Mabogunje, Regional Director of Lagos/Ogun for Dangote Cement, disclosed that the company has invested over $700 million in land acquisition, machinery, infrastructure, manpower, and other key areas to boost local sugar production.
“The company is committed to ensuring that Nigeria stops the importation of raw sugar by aggressively executing its Sugar Backward Integration project,” Dangote said. “We have invested over $700 million in critical areas, including community relations and corporate social responsibility (CSR), to drive this vision”.
Beyond sugar production, Dangote highlighted the company’s investment in agriculture to support the government’s food security agenda. He assured that these agricultural products would soon be available in the market.
On the significance of the trade fair, Dangote expressed optimism that it would help increase awareness of the company’s products, generate sales, attract new buyers, and open up new markets, ultimately driving job creation and economic growth.
”We are confident that this longstanding partnership with OGUNCCIMA will benefit not just both parties but also Nigeria and the broader African economy,” he added.
Meanwhile, Oludaisi Elemide, Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, commended the Dangote Group for its contributions to economic development and urged the company to further enhance its environmental sustainability efforts.
