Umar Sani, a former spokesperson to ex-Vice President Namadi Sambo and a leading figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has strongly criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s economic policies, claiming they are pushing Nigeria toward economic collapse.
In a statement released on Sunday, Sani accused the Tinubu administration of pursuing a “state capture agenda” aimed at consolidating power and destabilizing the nation’s political and economic structures. He condemned several key policy decisions, notably the removal of fuel subsidies, the floating of the naira, and electricity tariff hikes, describing them as reckless moves that have exacerbated poverty across the country.
“On his very first day in office, President Tinubu showed a startling disregard for the well-being of Nigerians,” Sani stated. “He casually announced the removal of the fuel subsidy and the change in exchange rate policy immediately after taking office, admitting that these decisions took ‘great courage’ despite their potential consequences.”
Sani argued that the removal of the fuel subsidy and the floating of the naira triggered soaring prices and hyperinflation, causing severe damage to the economy and making life even more difficult for millions of Nigerians. He also criticized the restructuring of electricity tariffs into Bands A, B, and C, claiming that the steep price increases have further burdened already struggling citizens.
“The categorization of electricity consumers and the significant tariff hikes have only deepened the hardship for ordinary Nigerians,” Sani said.
Additionally, Sani pointed to the removal of subsidies for agriculture, livestock, and credit schemes, which he claimed has only pushed more citizens into poverty and sparked nationwide protests. He also highlighted growing resistance to the administration’s proposed tax reforms, warning that these policies reflect a blatant disregard for the welfare of Nigerians.
“The economic crisis we are facing today is a direct result of poorly planned and hastily executed policies. Tinubu’s actions are leading Nigeria toward economic ruin,” Sani asserted.
In closing, Sani urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and resist any efforts that could undermine the country’s democracy or economic future.
