The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Lagos State Command, has arrested two women and shut down an illegal factory in Badagry over the alleged production of adulterated fruit juice.
Operatives arrested the suspects, aged 48 and 50, during a production run between Saturday, September 19, and Sunday, September 20, after five days of surveillance. The operation was carried out in collaboration with a Nigerian Army formation in the area.
According to preliminary findings by the Corps, the product, branded “Barkas Juice,” was made from water, synthetic flavourings, industrial sweeteners, artificial colourants, preservatives and other additives, without real fruit. It also allegedly carried a fake NAFDAC registration number and was being distributed to markets in Lagos, Benin City and other parts of the country.
Items recovered at the site included a truck, cartons of the suspected adulterated juice, production machinery, chemicals, drums and a gas cylinder.
Lagos Commandant Adedotun Keshinro ordered the immediate shutdown of the factory. He said the suspects would face further investigation and prosecution, with the Corps set to work with NAFDAC and other relevant agencies.
