The authorities in Burkina Faso have announced that a Nigerian Air Force C130 transport aircraft carrying eleven soldiers was compelled to land in the country on Monday after it allegedly entered Burkinabe airspace without the required clearance.
The report was released by the Agence d’information du Burkina, the national news agency, which published a formal statement from the Confederation of Sahel States. According to the statement, the aircraft made an unexpected landing in Bobo Dioulasso following an in flight emergency while it was operating within Burkina Faso’s airspace.
The translated statement explained that the military plane was carrying two crew members and nine passengers, all of whom were Nigerian military personnel.
Burkinabe authorities said a preliminary investigation confirmed that the aircraft did not possess the necessary authorisation to fly over the country. The Confederation of Sahel States condemned the incident, describing it as a serious violation of the sovereignty of its member nations.
The group said its air and ground defence systems were placed on maximum alert during the event and were authorised to intercept or neutralise any aircraft found violating the region’s airspace.
As at the time of this report, neither the Federal Government of Nigeria nor the Nigerian Air Force has issued an official reaction to the development.
