The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) plans to close the runway at Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri for about 25 days starting October 20 to carry out urgent repairs, resurfacing and an extension.
The temporary shutdown was announced in a statement issued on Thursday by FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire. The authority said the closure remains subject to final confirmation after consultations with stakeholders.
FAAN cited deteriorating runway conditions, including potholes and extensive surface cracking made worse by recent heavy rainfall, as the reason for the intervention. The works will repair damaged pavement, treat cracks and resurface affected sections to restore operational safety.
The project also includes extending the runway so the airport can handle wide-body aircraft as passenger and flight traffic to the southeast grows. FAAN said the upgrades are needed ahead of the expected rise in traffic during the Christmas season and are intended to improve safety and passenger experience.
Travellers planning to use the airport during the proposed closure period have been advised to contact their airlines for schedule updates and alternative arrangements. FAAN said the final closure and reopening dates will be announced once consultations are completed.
The Owerri works follow similar FAAN interventions at other airports. In April 2025 the authority temporarily closed Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu over runway damage. In June 2025 it announced a phased renovation of Terminal One at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.
