A growing fuel crisis is spreading across parts of Africa as disruptions linked to the ongoing Middle East conflict continue to strain global supply chains and major shipping routes, leading to shortages and long queues at filling stations.
Mozambique has become the latest country affected, with motorists in cities such as Maputo facing extended waits for fuel amid mounting supply challenges.
Across East Africa, pump prices have surged in Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, while Kenya has so far managed to maintain supplies through its government-to-government fuel importation arrangement.
Speaking on the situation, Kenya’s Treasury Cabinet Secretary, John Mbadi warned that the crisis could persist for some time, noting that the Middle East conflict has forced countries around the world to compete for alternative fuel supplies.
According to Mbadi, the Middle East remains a major source of fuel for African nations, making the continent highly vulnerable to disruptions in the region.
The shortages have had a deeper impact in Ethiopia, where limited diesel supplies have disrupted transport operations in the capital, Addis Ababa, leaving many vehicles unable to operate for long periods.
Burundi is also experiencing severe fuel scarcity, with long queues reported at petrol stations in Bujumbura and transport services slowed as economic activities suffer.
To prevent shortages, the Kenyan government said it has partnered with companies including Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, Emirates National Oil Company and Saudi Aramco to source fuel through alternative channels outside the affected routes.
Kenyan authorities have also rejected opposition calls to review the government-to-government fuel import framework, insisting that altering the arrangement could worsen the situation.
“If we review G-to-G, we will end up with no fuel in the country,” Mbadi said.
