Nigerian soldiers who returned from United Nations peacekeeping missions in Sudan, Gambia and Guinea-Bissau about four months ago are still waiting for substantial unpaid allowances, according to insider sources.
The sources said the United Nations has already transferred the relevant funds to the Nigerian government, yet the troops have not received their full entitlements. Payment shortfalls differ by mission: soldiers deployed to Sudan and Guinea-Bissau received three months’ allowances and remain owed seven months each, while those who served in Gambia were paid for six months and are still due another six.
“We are calling on the Federal Government of Nigeria to urgently pay the outstanding entitlements owed to Nigerian soldiers who were deployed abroad and returned about four months ago, but have still yet received all the fund due to them,” one source said. “We understand that the United Nations has already made the necessary payments for these soldiers’ entitlements. However, despite this, the Nigerian Government has yet to ensure that the soldiers receive what they are rightfully owed.”
A group describing itself as concerned soldiers issued a formal appeal to the Federal Government and military authorities to settle the arrears without further delay. “These are men and women who were sent abroad to serve their country and who risked their lives in the line of duty. They deserve to receive their rightful payments without unnecessary delay,” the group stated. It added that if the matter remains unresolved, the soldiers would publicise the situation themselves.
When contacted for clarification, the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, said he was driving and asked for a text message. A follow-up text seeking comment on the reported delays had not been answered by the time of filing.
