The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has condemned the recent terrorist attack on Yashikira community in Baruten Local Government Area of Kwara State, where armed bandits reportedly set the Emir’s palace ablaze and abducted several women and children.
In a statement issued by its National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, the group expressed outrage that the community was allegedly left at the mercy of the attackers for hours without any intervention from security agencies.
HURIWA described the incident as another indication of the worsening insecurity across the country, warning that Nigeria was gradually slipping into lawlessness, fear and widespread violence under the administration of President Bola Tinubu.
The group noted that the Yashikira invasion occurred barely a day after suspected terrorists reportedly attacked a prayer gathering at Ori-Oke Ajaiye in Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State, where worshippers were killed and several others abducted during a night vigil.
According to Onwubiko, it was troubling that while terrorists and bandits continued to launch coordinated attacks in different parts of the country, political leaders appeared more focused on political calculations and preparations for the 2027 elections than on addressing the nation’s worsening security crisis.
He lamented that innocent Nigerians were being killed, kidnapped and displaced daily while citizens in many communities continued to live in fear.
HURIWA further warned that the growing frequency and sophistication of attacks suggested that criminal networks were becoming increasingly emboldened due to what it described as weak and inconsistent government responses.
The association also raised concerns over persistent attacks on churches, schools, farming communities and travellers in states such as Kaduna, Kwara, Niger and Benue, stressing that kidnappings of schoolchildren and attacks on rural communities had continued despite repeated assurances from government officials.
The group therefore called for the immediate declaration of a national security emergency in terror-affected communities across Northern Nigeria, alongside a complete overhaul of the country’s security and intelligence systems.
